Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! Acts 5:29

Acts 5:17-42

Have you ever been criticized for doing the right thing? Have you ever had to stand up for someone else who could not defend themselves? Faithfulness, a Fruit of the Spirit, can be seen in many different circumstances, but at its root it is standing up for what we believe in because it is the right thing to do.

The apostles’ unrelenting faith in Christ made many people upset, even jealous, including the High Priest who gave orders to kill the apostles if they ever spoke the name of Jesus. By the grace of God they were saved and they continued to preach the Good News to whoever they could. They were not afraid because they knew they were doing the right thing.

As Christians, we have opportunities to express faithfulness daily. The world does not want to hear the Good News, but it is desperate for it. The world loves to tear people down, but it needs faithful servants of Christ to build people up. There are likely people in our own lives who prefer we be silent than talk about Jesus, but the Bible encourages us to be faithful and continue sharing Christ because it is the right thing to do.

When you come across a situation where you are tempted to be silent rather than do what is right, think about Jesus and the immense lengths He went to share His love with others even when He was continually persecuted and criticized for it. He shared the gospel even when it cost His life and He stood up for the outcasts of society even when no one else would. We are called to obey God, not the people of this world, and God always wants us to do the right thing.

Questions to think about:

  1. Has there been a time you chose to be silent rather than share Christ?
  2. Why did you choose silence?
  3. How do you plan to speak up in faith in the future?
