Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, ‘Young man, your sins are forgiven.’” (Luke 5:20)

Luke 5:17-26

Have you ever been up against a wall you cannot move? When you need or want something desperately but there is something, or someone, standing in your way? It can make us feel helpless, like there is nothing we can do to change our circumstances for the better. But it is in those moments – those desperate, hopeless, scary moments – that God calls us to put our faith in Him.

The men trying to bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus were up against a wall, quite literally. They knew if they could get the man to Jesus He could heal him, but they could not get inside the building because of the large crowd. Instead, they went up on the roof and lowered the man on his mat into the building. Jesus was astounded by their faith and said to the paralyzed man, “Your sins are forgiven.” He honored the faith of the men. He instructed the paralyzed man to stand up and walk so that is what he did. The man went home praising God.

The men did not let the crowd stop them because they had faith that God could heal their friend. It would have been easy to just give up and go home, but instead they found another way around the obstacle. They trusted in God’s power, and because of that, He met their needs. Jesus honored their faith and healed their friend.

Questions to think about:

  1. Is there a situation in your life that seems out of your control?
  2. What is the unmovable wall you are up against?
  3. The paralyzed man could not get to Jesus on his own. Who can you ask to come alongside you and join you in faith and prayer?
