I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. -John 11:25

Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary

Many people came from Jerusalem to console Mary and Martha over the loss of their brother, Lazarus. When Jesus arrived at Bethany, He was informed that Lazarus died recently and had been in the grave for four days. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus then responded, “Your brother will rise again… I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” Martha told Jesus that she had always believed that He was the Son of God.

Mary, Martha and their friends all believed in Jesus’ power to heal because they believed He was the Savior. Although they believed, Jesus still wanted to grow their faith. He wanted them to see the full power of God and to give truth to His promises. Jesus allowed Lazarus to die in order to show God’s ultimate power. So when Jesus said that He is the resurrection and the life, He was saying He is the source of both. There is no resurrection or eternal life without Christ. Jesus wants us to have eternal life and live with him in Heaven one day… all because of His unconditional, everlasting love for us.

JESUS IS THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE.

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:

  1. What does it mean that Jesus is both the resurrection and the life?
  2. Why does Jesus want to spend eternity with me?
  3. Has there been a situation in my life that God has allowed to help grow my faith?
