I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:7

Luke 15:1-7

We have all lost something before, whether it was an expensive pair of sunglasses or just a missing sock. If it was a valuable item, you are likely more willing to spend time looking for it, but if it is just a $1 bill or an old sweater, you might not even think twice about it. The value of what you have lost determines the amount of time you spend looking for it. You are more valuable to God than you could ever imagine and He told a parable that teaches a lesson to prove it to us.

Jesus used the story of a shepherd and his lost sheep to teach us about our value in His eyes. If a shepherd had 100 sheep and lost one, he would surely leave the flock behind to find the one missing sheep, Jesus explained. The shepherd would be thrilled and would joyfully bring the sheep back to its flock once he found it. To a shepherd, sheep were precious and valuable – they were worth protecting.

Just as with the sheep, Jesus explains that there is abundant joy in heaven when one sinner repents and gives their life to Christ – even more so than if 99 other virtuous men and women had never strayed from God. God loves us and wants each and every one of us to be a part of His family. Because of this, He intentionally seeks us out just as the shepherd looks for his lost sheep. He forgives us for our sins and joyfully brings us home to be in heaven with Him for eternity. By choosing to follow Jesus, you can choose to be a part of His family!

Questions to think about:

  1. Describe a time you lost something and how hard/not hard you searched for it.
  2. What are the things Jesus has done for you to “search” for you and show His love?
  3. Have you ever felt like you did not deserve Jesus’ love?
