Week 2: Gideon in Battle

“But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’” Judges 6:23

Read: Judges 6-7

In history class, you hear time and time again of huge armies defeating smaller ones in battles and wars around the world. It’s rare to hear about a time when a small army is victorious, because the large armies are so much stronger! When we look at the story of Gideon in battle, though, we see God doing what He does best: defying the odds and providing for His people in unexpected ways.

When God calls you to do something, you can be assured He has already prepared you for the challenge. Gideon was doubtful when he entered battle with 32,000 men compared to the Midianite’s 135,000. God continued to increase Gideon’s fears when he cut his men down to 10,000 and finally to only 300. How could they possibly defeat the enemy?

God had already prepared Gideon and provided the perfect army of men for him. God knew what He was doing! Even though Gideon was afraid, he persevered and trusted in God’s plan and his army was ultimately victorious!

When we feel weak or unprepared, we can focus on the strength of God instead of our fears. He goes before us to provide what we need!

Questions to think about:

  1. Describe a time you’ve felt unprepared.
  2. Did Gideon express doubt or was he fully confident in God’s plan?
  3. It’s okay if God’s plan seems scary! How can you pray for God to reveal His plan in your life?
